Yami Gautam has revealed that there was a time when she was ready to walk away from Bollywood, having accepted that her journey in the industry might be over. The actor shared that before the success of Uri: The Surgical Strike, she had made peace with leaving films and returning to her home state of Himachal Pradesh.
Yami Gautam recalls she wanted to quit Bollywood
Reflecting on the difficult phase in her career, Yami said she had reached a point where she no longer wanted to keep chasing opportunities if things did not improve. She admitted that despite making a successful debut with Vicky Donor, sustaining a career in the film industry proved far more challenging than she had imagined.
“I had made peace with the fact that maybe this wasn’t meant for me. I was ready to go back. I had accepted that if things didn’t work out, I would leave the industry,” Yami said while recalling the uncertainty she faced before Uri changed the course of her career.
Yami Gautam explained that she never believed in aggressively networking or attending parties simply to stay visible. Instead, she preferred to let her work speak for itself, even though she was repeatedly advised to market herself more actively.
“I was told many times that I needed to socialise and network. But I couldn’t do something that wasn’t true to who I am. I always believed my work should speak louder than anything else,” she shared.
How Uri changed her career
Everything changed with Uri: The Surgical Strike, which became a major commercial and critical success. The film not only earned widespread acclaim but also gave Yami the confidence to trust her instincts when selecting projects.
Looking back, the actor said the success of Uri and later Bala helped her become fearless in her choices. Rather than worrying about fitting into industry expectations, she decided to focus on stories and filmmakers she genuinely connected with.
“I became fearless after Uri and Bala. Those films gave me the confidence to believe that I didn’t need to follow a formula. I just needed to be honest with my choices,” she said.
Today, Yami is regarded as one of the industry’s most dependable performers, known for backing content-driven films. She says the struggles she endured ultimately shaped her outlook, teaching her patience, resilience and the importance of believing in her craft even when the odds seemed stacked against her.
