Veteran actor Paresh Rawal has shared his candid thoughts on the evolving landscape of comedy in India, praising the immense talent of performers like Sunil Grover while also admitting that television shows such as The Kapil Sharma Show pose stiff competition to comedy films today.

Speaking about the current scenario, Rawal highlighted how the rise of television and digital comedy has changed audience expectations. He pointed out that comedians today bring an extraordinary level of skill and creativity to the table. “When you look at Kapil Sharma Show and when you look at Sunil Grover kind of talent, these guys are bloody huge talent. It is a bloody volcano,” he said, emphasising the scale and impact of their performances.
The actor explained that matching this level of humour in films is not easy. According to him, filmmakers need to rethink their approach if they want to compete with such content. “If you want to compete with that kind of comedy, you have to change your thinking or else it won’t work,” Rawal added, underlining the need for innovation in the genre.
He also shed light on the challenges behind crafting good comedy, noting that writing humour is far more difficult than it appears. “Comedy likhna and use maintain karna is very tough,” he said, pointing out that even successful comedy shows rely on large teams of writers to keep content fresh and engaging. In contrast, he noted, many film productions struggle with limited resources, making it harder to consistently deliver high-quality comedic content.

Kapil Sharma’s show is everyday competition to any comedy film,” he remarked. Despite occasionally being “over the top,” he acknowledged that such shows set a benchmark and keep audiences entertained regularly.
The actor’s comments come as he enjoys appreciation for his recent film Bhooth Bangla, where he once again showcases his comic timing. Reflecting on the industry, Rawal suggested that while comedy remains a beloved genre, sustaining it in today’s fast-paced entertainment ecosystem requires both strong writing and a fresh perspective.
Through his observations, Rawal not only praised contemporary comedians but also highlighted the shifting dynamics of the entertainment industry where television and digital platforms are increasingly influencing how humour is created, consumed, and judged by audiences.
