Rajpal Yadav on cheque bounce case: ‘Why would I risk my reputation for 5 crore?

Rajpal Yadav recently cleared his dues of Rs 2 crore in the cheque-bounce case, after which the Supreme Court released his passport and allowed him to travel for work. He has now addressed the cheque-bounce case against him, questioning the allegations of fraud and cheating over a disputed amount. The actor also questioned the lender’s authority to provide the alleged loan in 2010.

In an interview with ANI, he said, “One side has been heard, but how can this matter be resolved without hearing the other side? If it was about Rs 5 crore, it could have been reconciled. It was about Rs 22 crore. Not Rs 5 crore, it was Rs 22 crore. From day one, I have said that three allegations were made against me: that Rajpal committed a Rs 5 crore fraud, took a loan, and cheated a businessman. But how can it be cheating when there are cheques and so many agreements?”

From day one, I have said that three allegations were made against me: that Rajpal committed a Rs 5 crore fraud, took a loan, and cheated a businessman. But how can it be cheating when there are cheques and so many agreements?… Why would I risk my name, reputation and respect for Rs 5 crore? And if it was a loan, they must explain whether they were authorised to lend Rs 5 crore in 2010 and whether they had a licence or were an NBFC…”

“And the one who has won the hearts of the whole world, will he cheat for Rs 5 crore? Why would I risk my name, reputation and respect for Rs 5 crore? And if it was a loan, they must explain whether they were authorised to lend Rs 5 crore in 2010 and whether they had a licence or were an NBFC,” he added.
Rajpal Yadav’s deadline in cheque-bounce case
On September 15, a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana gave the actor the last opportunity of two weeks to come up with a concrete proposal to pay an outstanding amount to a private firm and directed him to deposit Rs 2 crore with the apex court registry.
The court was critical of the fact that, despite the expiry of the two-week period, no payment had been made by October 5. The actor has deposited Rs 1.15 crore through a demand draft and plans to raise the remaining Rs 85 lakh by selling ancestral property.
For the unversed, Rajpal Yadav reportedly took a loan of around Rs 5 crore from a Delhi-based company to make his first film as a director, Ata Pata Laapata, back in 2010. The movie did not perform well at the box office, failing to earn enough money to cover the costs. The issue led to multiple cheque-bounce complaints against the actor and his wife. He was even jailed in the matter.
