IMA seeks review of Sunny Deol's Suryaa, questions violence against doctors

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, seeking an urgent review of Sunny Deol’s upcoming film Suryaa – Ant Se Aarambh Tak over its portrayal of the medical profession and alleged violence against healthcare workers.
IMA raises concerns over violence against doctors in Suryaa
In its letter, the association raised concerns about the film’s depiction of corruption in the healthcare system, alleged misconduct by medical professionals and scenes showing violence against doctors, nursing staff and hospital personnel. It has called for an impartial review and appropriate action if warranted under applicable law.
The IMA argued that the film’s portrayal could create the impression that corruption, unethical practices and wrongdoing are widespread across the medical fraternity. It stressed that individual cases of misconduct should be investigated and addressed through legal and disciplinary action without damaging the reputation of doctors who remain committed to their profession.
The association also expressed concern over scenes depicting physical assaults on healthcare professionals, particularly if such acts are presented as heroic or justified. According to the IMA, such portrayals risk normalising violence against people working to save lives.
The association also cautioned that such depictions could undermine public confidence in the doctor-patient relationship. It emphasised that mutual trust and cooperation between patients and medical professionals are essential for effective treatment and healthcare delivery.
Clarifying its position, the IMA said it does not support corruption, unethical medical practices or professional misconduct. However, it maintained that individual wrongdoing should not be generalised to an entire profession.
The association further expressed concern that negative portrayals could demoralise medical students and discourage aspiring doctors from entering the field. It highlighted the need for dedicated and motivated medical professionals to meet the healthcare needs of the country’s growing population.

The teaser begins with a personal loss that leaves the central character scarred by his past before drawing him into a disturbing chain of events connected to the medical system.
