Ramayana BO: Ranbir Kapoor film fails to beat Adipurush despite strong start

After months of excitement and anticipation, Ramayana has finally hit the theatres, and the Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash starrer has made a solid start at the box office. The two-part epic, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and backed by Namit Malhotra, was released worldwide on Thursday, November 5, ahead of the Diwali weekend. Despite its stellar opening, the film has failed to surpass some major box-office records, including the opening day numbers of Adipurush and Dhurandhar 2.
Ramayana box office collection report
Advance bookings for Ramayana opened on Dussehra, 15 days ahead of its release. However, pre-sales gained momentum only after exhibitors and distributors resolved their disagreement last week. By the time the film hit theatres, it had sold tickets worth Rs 200 crore worldwide, with over Rs 120 crore coming from India. The film’s opening day advance bookings alone contributed Rs 45 crore in gross collections domestically, indicating a positive start at the box office.
Several shows of Ramayana remained houseful across India on Thursday morning, reflecting the film’s massive buzz. While the advance bookings did not reach the extraordinary levels seen by Dhurandhar 2 earlier this year, the film has still delivered an impressive opening. Ramayana earned Rs 64.85 crore net in India on day one, driven largely by the Hindi version. Despite featuring Yash as Ravana, the Kannada version had a slower start, contributing only Rs 7.25 crore. The Telugu version also performed well, while Malayalam and Tamil recorded comparatively modest numbers.
Ramayana falls short of Adipurush
Ramayana has surpassed Dhurandhar’s opening-day collection by the afternoon itself. The Ranveer Singh-starrer opened at Rs 28 crore last year. By the end of its first day, the film has also outperformed the opening-day collections of blockbusters such as Pathaan ( Rs 57 crore), Animal ( Rs 63 crore), and Drishyam 2 ( Rs 62 crore). However, it was unable to surpass Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan ( Rs 75 crore) and Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which earned staggering Rs 102 crore on day one. But perhaps the biggest setback for fans was that the film failed to surpass another Ramayana adaptation, Adipurush. The Prabhas-starrer, which recieved underwhelming reviews, opened at Rs 86.75 crore in 2023.
