Padma Shri Dr Anil K Rajvanshi to receive PAN IIT Social Impact Award 2026

Director of the Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI),  Dr Anil K Rajvanshi, has been selected for the prestigious PAN IIT Social Impact Award, recognising his decades-long contribution to grassroots innovation and sustainable rural development.

The award will be presented on April 24 at the PAN IIT Conference 2026 in Long Beach, California, one of the most prominent global gatherings of alumni from the Indian Institutes of Technology.

A graduate of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and the University of Florida, Dr Rajvanshi returned to India in 1981, leaving behind a lucrative career in the United States to work in rural development. He has since led NARI—founded in 1968 by B V Nimbkar—into a pioneering institution in agriculture, renewable energy, and animal husbandry.

Under his leadership, NARI has been at the forefront of “frugal innovation” in deep-tech agriculture, developing cost-effective solutions tailored to rural India. The institute’s work spans innovations such as e-rickshaws, ethanol production from sweet sorghum, and the use of ethanol for cooking and lighting—technologies that have influenced policy and practice across the country.

Dr Rajvanshi and his team have also played a key role in shaping India’s national policy on biomass-based power generation. Among other breakthroughs, NARI developed thornless safflower varieties and introduced the FecB gene in sheep to enhance twin births, contributing to agricultural productivity and rural incomes.

Several public welfare initiatives, including community kitchen models like Amma Unavagam in Tamil Nadu and Shiv Bhojan in Maharashtra, are said to have drawn inspiration from NARI’s early experiments in rural food systems.

For his contributions, Dr Rajvanshi has received numerous honours, including the Jamnalal Bajaj Award, induction into the Solar Hall of Fame, the Globe Award presented by Crown Princess Victoria, and distinguished alumnus awards from both IIT Kanpur and the University of Florida. In 2022, he was conferred the Padma Shri.

The PAN IIT Conference has, over the years, featured global leaders such as Bill Clinton, Narendra Modi, Sundar Pichai, and Bill Gates, reflecting the global influence of IIT alumni in technology, business, and academia.

This year, along with Dr Rajvanshi, five other honourees from Silicon Valley have been recognised for their leadership and impact across academia, artificial intelligence, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and corporate sectors.

Dr Rajvanshi’s recognition underscores the growing global acknowledgement of grassroots innovation and sustainable solutions emerging from rural India.
